How to Tell the Difference between Theology of the Cross and Theology of Glory

Print this sheet and keep it someplace near the dinner table, like on the fridge. At least three times next week at dinner, use Prayer Time and one other family activity to make your confirmation learning come alive!

Prayer Time
Lord Jesus, Help us focus on you and on the cross, and not on our own work. Be with us as we share your love with others. Amen.

Key Words
Keep a family white board someplace near the dinner table, and write these words on it. Try writing a family definition for each one during the week.

THEOLOGY
EGOTISM
GRACE

Talk Time

  • Do you display a cross in your home? Talk about this choice in your family.
  • Is anyone in your family a crossword puzzle solver? Construct a Bible crossword puzzle together with “cross words” from this week’s lesson and 1 Corinthians 2:1-13.
  • Get out some symbols of money at home-checkbook, budgeting program, credit cards. Use these symbols to start talking about whether the way your family thinks of money is as a gift from God (theology of the cross) or something you can have more and more of if you try hard enough (theology of glory). Talk together about how God is calling your family to relate to money.
  • Read your church newsletter or look at the Web site and talk about what kind of theology you find there. Without being self-righteous, write a letter to your church about whether you find words about what we have done, or what God has done, or both.

Web Time
Look at a Web sites to learn about crosses from around the world. Which ones have you seen? Are some more meaningful for you than others?

Ritual Time
Make a cross out of simple votive candles on the table. Gather in the evening, light the candles, watch them together with a time of silence, and close with the Lord’s Prayer.

Learner Sheet: Five Things You Should Know About the Lutheran Reformation

Luke 4:18; Ephesians 2:8; 4:15

The Big Idea: God used the Lutheran Reformation to change the world and to clarify the Gospel for a new age.

Big Fun Idea

Have a movie night at someone’s house. Rent the movie Luther (2003), provide popcorn, and enjoy a night at the movies. Afterward, discuss some of the interesting or surprising points in the movie. Ask people to identify one thing they didn’t previously know about Luther or the Reformation.

Big Serving Idea

In the spirit of reformation, find something at your church or in your neighborhood that needs to be fixed or improved and make a plan for how to make it better. You may spend as much time (or more) planning the project as you do carrying it out.

Prayer Time

Remember your partner’s prayer needs-record them here.

Discussion Time

  • Take a look at item 2 of the “Five Things You Should Know about the Lutheran Reformation” on page 58 of The Lutheran Handbook. Many 16th-century reformers were not interested in creating “new” churches. However, that’s what happened, and today there are literally hundreds of Christian denominations. Is this a good thing or not? Would it be better if we went back to the way it was before the Reformation-one “true” church? Why or why not?
  • The word reform means change, but it doesn’t imply throwing out the good with the bad. What things in your life would you like to change? How can you go about suggesting or making changes? Pay close attention to your motivation for wanting change. Do you desire change for selfish reasons, or because it’s the right thing to do?
  • What major benefits came out the Lutheran Reformation that you can enjoy today?

Confirmation Updates

If You Miss a Class…

If you are unable to attend class on Wednesday, please send an email to confirmation@bethany-denver.org prior to Wednesday night so that your absence will be excused.  Then, you will need to make up the work by going to the Here We Stand website.  You will need to have your User ID and password available to access the site.  Once logged on, go the Class Connection menu at the top.  Select the New Testament from the pull down menu.  Click on the appropriate lesson (the one that you missed) on left side of the page and complete the activities.  Once completed, you will need to select Confirmation Homework to submit it - make sure this happens!  Once the completed homework form is received by Debbie Dexter and approved by a leader, your absence will be “taken off the list”.  Remember, all make-up work needs to be completed within TWO WEEKS of the absence!  Come the end of the year, you will thank us for this requirement…

If you need to find the class topic for the one you missed, look at the weekly calendar.

If you need a login ID and/or password, please send an email to sarah@bethany-denver.org
